Phnom Penh: Kang Keng International Airport in Sihanoukville has begun to expand its runway and to allow larger aircraft to be able to accommodate 10 million passengers a year.

Flight Chief of the Cambodian airline, Pich Sophon Dara, said by phone on the afternoon of February 13 that the expansion of the Kang Keng airport has begun, with the expanding the 1,000-meter runway, making the airport load more passengers and a bigger plane.

By expanding this airport, it has the capacity and length of the same runway as the current Phnom Penh International Airport, while today it is as the same size as the airport in Siem Reap, he added.

“After this stretch of the road is expanded, we will continue to build a passenger building to enable this airport to accommodate 10 million passengers a year. Currently, there are 11 airline companies and is currently landing at the airport, which does not include charter flight,” Mr. Sophon Dara said.

However, he did not elaborate on the size of the investment capital on the expansion of the runway and the cost of building future passenger buildings.

According to Mr. Sophon Dara, the expansion plan of the airport will be completed by the end of this year or early 2019 if there is no change.

Cambodia’s Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen recently said that Sihanoukville’s Kang Keng Airport will be expanded to accommodate more passengers, as the government’s goal of allowing Cambodia to receive air travel is increasing oo 30 million by 2030.

At the same time, Tianjing Union Development Group has also started construction of an international airport in Botum Sakor District, Koh Kong Province.
