Land bridge project draws interest from over 100 companies: ministry

More than 100 Thai and foreign companies have shown interest in investing in the government’s ambitious land bridge project that would serve as a link between the Pacific and Indian oceans in the South of Thailand, the Transport Ministry said on Friday.

The ministry’s Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning hosted a market sounding event in Bangkok on Thursday and invited those who were interested to express their opinions and concerns about the 1-trillion-baht project.

The mega-project involves constructing deep-sea ports in Chumphon and Ranong and transforming transport routes between the two provinces to link the ports. The land bridge is expected to help ease shipping congestion in the Malacca Straits, currently the main regional trade route for cargo.

Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri told participants that foreign investors had shown overwhelming interest in the project during the roadshow events overseas conducted by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and ministry executives.

Investors from China, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates have already visited the areas to conduct preliminary surveys, she added.

Apart from direct benefits to logistics operators, the private sector would also be invited to take part in the development of commercial projects around the land bridge and benefit from concession contracts over 50 years, she said.

9Among the interested investors are operators in shipping, logistics and industrial estates, as well as property developers, banks and providers of related services. They include WHA Industrial Development, Amata Corporation, China Harbour Engineering, Evergreen Container Terminal, Hebei Port Group, Sinotrans Thai Logistics, Siam Piwat, Bank of China, Nippon Koei, and Mitsubishi.

The office said it would use opinions and suggestions from the participants to prepare the request for proposal, as well as the draft of the Southern Economic Corridor Act that will cover legal requirements, conditions, and privileges for investors in the project.
The bidding process is expected to start in the last quarter of next year.

China Dumps $101,900,000,000 in US Treasuries in 12 Months As Fed Governor Dismisses ‘Imminent Demise’ of US Dollar

New numbers show China has sold $101.9 billion in US Treasury securities over the past 12 months.

The Treasury Department says China cut its holdings from $869.3 billion in March of last year to $767.4 billion in March of this year. China’s holdings have steadily dropped from an all-time high of $1.31 trillion, which was set in November of 2013.

The news comes as China shifts away from the dollar in cross-border trade and as the global economic alliance known as BRICS contemplates the launch of a digital competitor to the US dollar.The developments are not going unnoticed at the Federal Reserve.

At a recent conference on the global importance of the US dollar, Fed Governor Christopher Waller said the demise of the dollar is exaggerated, but acknowledged the role of the world’s reserve currency is evolving.

“There has for some time been commentary predicting the dollar is destined for demise – potentially an imminent demise…
The role of the US in the world economy is changing, and finance is always changing.

The dollar remains by far the most widely used currency by a number of metrics.”
Waller points to America’s use of sanctions against foreign nations as a factor in the dollar’s future dominance.

“If these sanctions and policies are long-lasting, the shifting cross-border payments landscape – including the rapid growth of digital currencies – could also pose challenges to the dominant role of the US dollar.”

Back in February, Waller said despite the challenges, nations have “few practical alternatives to the dollar,” noting that “in times of global stress, the world runs to the dollar, not away from it.” Source: Daily Hodl

Housing ministry to focus on abandoned housing projects, ready for stakeholder collaboration

The government said it will prioritise addressing the issue of unlicensed abandoned private housing projects, including by collaborating with stakeholders.

According to Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu, there are 175 unlicensed abandoned private housing projects remaining in Peninsular Malaysia.

Aiman said the ministry is committed to continuing the agenda of the task force on sick and abandoned private housing projects (TFST), specifically targeting unlicensed abandoned private housing projects.“[The ministry] is ready to collaborate with relevant stakeholders and remains8 committed to addressing the issue of sick and abandoned private housing projects across the country,” she said in a statement on Thursday.

9Unlicensed private housing projects are those developed without obtaining an advertising permit and developer’s licence from the National Housing Department.

Meanwhile, Aiman said that in the first four years of 2024, the ministry has successfully rehabilitated 20,489 private housing units across 177 projects, with a gross development value (GDV) of RM14.89 billion.

These projects include 163 that obtained certificates of completion and compliance (CCC), 11 projects that transitioned from “sick” status to “progressing smoothly”, and three abandoned projects.

“Up to April 30, TFST identified 205 delayed private housing projects and 438 sick private housing projects, while the number of abandoned private housing projects remained at 115, with a combined GDV of RM189.67 billion,” Aiman said.

Roundup: Indonesia seeks investors to build Southeast Asia’s largest hydropower project

The owner of this Kayan Cascade hydropower project is PT Kayan Hydro Energy, a domestic company currently looking for investors to continue its big green energy mission, in line with the Indonesian government’s target of reaching 23 percent of the new renewable energy mix by 2025.“This is not only a national accomplishment as the largest hydropower plant in Southeast Asia, but also contributes to the worldwide reduction of the greenhouse effect. This represents Indonesia’s global contribution,” said President Director of PT Kayan Hydro Energy Andrew Suryali at an event on the project on Thursday.

Given its substantial capacity, the project is anticipated to play a significant role in supplying Indonesia with electricity and fostering sustainable economic development, Suryali said.

Having a total budget of 17.8 billion U.S. dollars, the project is planned to have five dams. Apart from generating electricity, the complex is projected to develop agriculture, plantations, forestry, irrigation and local tourism.

The first phase is currently under construction, with a capacity of 900 megawatts and is targeted for completion in 2029. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2035.

Executive of the Committee of PT Kayan Hydro Energy Steven Kho said Kalimantan would need a huge amount of electrical energy, as a green industrial area was being prepared and the country’s new capital, Nusantara, was being built. In July this year, President Joko Widodo plans to start his office in the new capital, and a number of civil servants will also be relocated from Jakarta to the archipelago.

“Our main consumer targets are industries and the new capital city. The rest is for exports,” said Kho.
Exploration with a number of partners from various countries is being carried out for the project.

“We are open to all partners, all investors, both domestic and foreign, as long as they agree on the quality characteristics of our concept which does not change the tropical forest ecosystem,”Kho added.

The construction of the first phase requires funds of around 3 to 4 billion U.S. dollars, according to Operations Director of PT Kayan Hydro Energy Sapta Nugraha. “The dam or Cascade 1 will take up 270 hectares of land and the remaining 2,000 hectares will be for the river area,” he said.Source: Xinhua
