China, Vietnam drag down Asean+3 economic growth forecast

This year’s growth forecast for the Asean plus three economies – China and Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea – has weakened from 4.4 per cent to 4.2 per cent, “primarily due to adjustments for China and Vietnam”, according to the Asean+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (Amro).

The Singapore-based macroeconomics forecasting organisation revised its 2024 growth expectations for China from 5.3 per cent to 5 per cent and for Vietnam from 6.3 per cent to 6.2 per cent “Asean+3 Regional Economic Outlook (AREO)” report released on Thursday.

And while the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) is expected to expand by 4.7 per cent in 2024, the plus-three economies are projected to grow by only 4.1 per cent overall, the report said.

“Growth for the region will be driven by continued recovery in external trade, resilient domestic demand, and a boost in tourism due to relaxed visa policies in some economies,” the report said.

But while China’s growth in the first half of the year puts it on track to achieve its annual gross domestic product growth target of “around 5 per cent”, the report also noted that slower growth in the second quarter had contributed to the lower forecasts.

“Key factors include weaker than-expected US employment data, slower growth in China in the second quarter, August’s global financial markets turbulence, and the shifting dynamics in the upcoming US presidential election,” the report added.

Thailand’s luxury market set to surpass Singapore in 2024

SINGAPORE: Thailand’s luxury market is set to surpass Singapore’s in 2024, with estimates projecting Thailand’s market value at $4.93 billion, compared to Singapore’s $4.23 billion. A recent report published by Canvas8, a global strategic insights practise with expertise in cultural and behavioural trends, highlighted how Southeast Asian shoppers are changing the global luxury landscape, with countries like Thailand and Vietnam challenging luxury hubs like Singapore.

The report, “How are Southeast Asian shoppers changing luxury?” was authored by Gwyneth King, with insights from Toch Barreiro, a creative director at Serious Studio in Manila, and Jose Luis Legaspi, a former marketing lecturer at De La Salle University in Manila.

Mr Legaspi pointed out that the growth of the Asian economy over the past two decades has made the Asian luxury consumer a major force in the market.

“The Asian luxury consumer has become a powerhouse in purchase and spending. Decades ago, it was only Japan that spearheaded the Asian luxury market, and it was Chinese tourists who came in droves when visiting fashion capitals like London or Paris,” he explained.

“Top luxury brands are now focusing their marketing efforts to sign up Asian endorsers that represent their current biggest market,” he added.

The luxury market in Southeast Asia is booming, supported by a rising number of ultra-high net worth individuals (UHNWI). Countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia are leading this growth. The total revenue from the Southeast Asian luxury market is expected to hit $16.01 billion in 2024, up from $14.38 billion in 2022.

Indian companies move in as US cuts China out of its solar industry

Indian companies are moving to fill the gap left by the exclusion of Chinese exports from the fast-growing US solar industry, as Washington steps up its crackdown on manufacturers with ties to Beijing.

Sumant Sinha, chief executive of ReNew, among India’s largest renewables companies, told the Financial Times that there “will be demand” for solar components from India as Washington reduces reliance on Chinese supplies for its energy transition.

“There is a need for some diversification, and India can actually become that plus one to China as far as the green tech supply chain is concerned,” Sinha said.

He added that ReNew was considering exporting to the US from its solar factories in India pending US tariff rules. “[India] will fill the gap.”

Washington is weighing additional tariffs on solar imports to protect the domestic industry after a flood of Chinese-produced panels drove global prices to record lows.

Last week, the Department of Commerce released preliminary estimates of duties as high as 293 per cent for solar cell exporters in four countries in south-east Asia, where the US sources the bulk of its solar supplies, often from Chinese companies.

The looming decision has driven developers and manufacturers to look beyond the region to markets notsubject to tariffs. Wood Mackenzie expects cell manufacturing in countries
outside of the main hubs of China and south-east Asia to more than double over the next couple of years, withIndia making up 40 per cent of newcapacity.

“There’s no modular manufacturer in India who is not thinking of exporting,” said Subrahmanyam Pulipaka, chief executive of the National Solar Energy Federation of India, a lobbying group that counts big developers such as Adani Group, Tata Power and ReNew among its member.

Unaffordable homes: Median prices are RM335k, while average monthly salaries are RM3k

KUALA LUMPUR: Affordability remains a major issue in the property market, with the median house price at RM335,000 while average monthly salary at around RM3,000 to RM3,500.

Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd (Kenanga Research) said in its note that this gap challenges many Malaysians, particularly first-time home buyers under 35 years of age.

National Property Information Centre’s (Napic) data in the second quarter of this year shows that residential overhang is now at 127,180 and concentrated in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, and Selangor.

This is a 3.0 per cent increase from 125,362 units in the first quarter.

While 63 per cent of new properties are priced below RM500,000, a significant portion of overhang units are priced below RM300,000.

“This suggests that despite the efforts to introduce more affordable housing options, many Malaysians, particularly younger buyers, still face challenges in purchasing homes due to insufficient income levels, difficulty in securing home loans, and rising cost-of-living expenses,” Kenanga Research said in a note.

According to the firm, increasing overhang units, particularly those priced below RM300,000, highlights the affordability crisis even in this lower price range.

It added that the concentration of overhang units in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, and Selangor suggests that the imbalance in housing demand and supply is more pronounced in urbanised regions, where land costs and demand pressures are higher.

Therefore, Kenanga Research noted that the gap between available housing and what first-time homebuyers can afford may call for more targeted government interventions.
