Thai SMEs urged to tap trade opportunities in Cambodia and Saudi Arabia

Cambodia and Saudi Arabia are as the new oasis of opportunities for Thai small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to expand trade partners, thanks to the robust economic growth and surge in investment projects, according to state agencies.

This year, the Board of Trade of Thailand and the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion (OSMEP) have partnered with Index Creative Village to participate in four international trade fairs in the two countries: Cambodia Architect & Dècor 2024; Cambodia Foodplus Expo 2024; and Cambodia Health & Beauty Expo 2024, which will take place from August 2-4 at Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Centre in Phnom Penh

The other major event is the International Mega Fair 2024 in Riyadh from November 15-17 at the Riyadh International Convention & Exhibition Centre. The trade fairs will mainly focus on B2B markets, bringing Thai SMEs from diverse industries into contact with prospective buyers through business matching sessions.

Mek-Kreingkrai Kanjanapokin, the founder and group CEO, Index Creative Village – Thailand’s leading international trade show platform – said that Cambodia was an attractive destination as the neighbouring country’s gross domestic product in 2024 was expected to grow more than 6.3% to US$35.16 billion. Cambodia’s population will increase to 17.12 million with a young median age of 24. In addition, there is a surge in construction of mega-infrastructure and real estate including shopping malls and residential projects.
Because of Thailand’s strategic location in ASEAN, the country has a logistical advantage to boost trade ties with Cambodia, Mek said.

This year, the countries are celebrating the 74th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations.

Mek added that trade shows in Cambodia over the past three years have been gaining interest, especially the Health & Beauty Expo, which has become the biggest show in the country. In 2023, the event recorded trade value of 142 million baht.

Speaking of opportunities in Saudi Arabia, Mek pointed to the second edition of the International Mega Fair scheduled to be held in Riyadh. The event is offering 30 per cent more space than last year. The show will focus on mum and kids, food and beverage, health and wellness, tourism, fragrance, lifestyle, build and decor, automobile and auto parts, agriculture, and MICE industries.

Thailand-Saudi Arabia bilateral trade in 2024 is expected to increase by 20 per cent to US$12 billion. In a bid to boost business opportunities between the two countries, the Board of Trade of Thailand has urged the government to appoint a Minister Counsellor (Commercial) to Riyadh.

Meanwhile, Wachira Kaewkor, deputy director-general, Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion, said that the office would subsidise 50% of exhibition space cost for medium-sized enterprises each and 80% for small and micro enterprises.

Cambodia approves investment projects worth 2.2 bln USD in Q1

Cambodia attracted fixed-asset investment of 2.2 billion U.S. dollars in the first quarter (Q1) of 2024, a sharp rise of 649 percent compared to the same period last year, said a Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC)’s report released on Friday.

The Southeast Asian nation approved 106 investment projects during the January-March period this year, significantly up from only 39 projects over the same period last year, generating approximately 107,000 jobs, the CDC said.

Those new investment projects were mainly focused on industries, infrastructure, hydroelectric power, agriculture, agro-industry, and tourism, it added.

Top five foreign investors in the kingdom are from China, Singapore, Vietnam, South Korea and the United States, the CDC said, adding that investment from China accounted for 777 million dollars, or 35 percent, of the total investment.

The Cambodian Ministry of Commerce’s Secretary of State and Spokesperson Penn Sovicheat said the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement, the Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA), and Cambodia’s new law on investment, are key factors to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) to the kingdom.

“Both RCEP and CCFTA are magnets to attract foreign investors to Cambodia,” he told Xinhua. “FDI, especially from China, is crucial to help boost Cambodia’s economic and trade growth.”

Singapore’s economic losses due to heat stress could nearly double to $1.64 billion in 2035 from pre-pandemic 2018 due to a decline in labor productivity, a recent study by the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine showed.

Back in 2018, heat strain caused an 11.3% fall in average productivity across Singapore’s four big economic sectors — services, construction, manufacturing and agriculture. And it’s on course to worsen.

Fall in productivity is expected to rise to 14% in 2035, leading to an economic loss of S$2.22 billion ($1.64 billion), after adjusting for inflation, the NUS Project HeatSafe report said.

The loss will be significantly higher for workers exposed to adverse environmental conditions — those working working under the sun, or being exposed to other sources of heat such as machineries.

“It is estimated that for every hot day, the reduced workers’ productivity during working hours (i.e., presenteeism) translates into a median income loss of S$21 per worker.

“Project HeatSafe is the first large-scale study in Singapore as well as the region aimed at assessing the impact of rising heat levels on productivity and health on an individual and macroeconomic level.

Dr. Natalia Borzino from the Singapore-ETH Centre, a collaborator for Project HeatSafe, said they took 2018 as the baseline for the study as it was pre-pandemic and also the last “normal year” that the team had data for.

The island-nation is warming twice as fast as the rest of the globe, with its UV index recently hitting “extreme” levels for the second time within four days, the highest band in Singapore’s gauge for solar UV radiation. The latest update reflects a “moderate” level as of Wednesday.
The Southeast Asian country is not alone in facing this intense heat.

Earlier in February, scientists warned that the world has surpassed a key warming threshold across an entire year for the first time on record. Last July, United Nations’ Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned that the world has moved away from global warming to “an era of global boiling.”

Aside from impacting cognitive capacity and physical exertion, the NUS research also found that extreme heat exposure poses a risk to Singapore’s fertility rate, which are already at historic lows.

US new home construction surged last month, as mortgage rates stayed high

Amid a housing shortage and an affordability crisis, US homebuilding heated up in February as builders anticipate demand for new homes to stay strong.

One sure way to improve affordability is to increase the availability of apartments to rent and homes to buy. In areas of the country where there has been robust homebuilding, rents and home price increases have been more moderate.

The pace of new housing starts soared by 10.7% in February from the month before, after slumping in January, according to data released Thursday by the Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Starts rose to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.521 million units last month, beating analysts’ estimates of 1.425 million. The pace rebounded from January’s revised pace of 1.374 million and was 5.9% above the 1.436 million pace a year ago.

Meanwhile, the pace of new building permits was up 1.9% from January, which was up 2.4% from a year ago.

Homebuyers look to new construction for much-needed inventory While the number of existing homes on the market remains historically low, new construction has provided a critical alternative for homebuyers.

Mortgage applications for a newly constructed home were up a whopping 15.7% in February from a year ago, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association; and up by 1% from January. The average loan size jumped to its highest level since last March at almost $406,000, but it was still below the record high of more than $436,000 in April 2022.

“It is possible that we could see more wiggle room on pricing in the coming months, as the inventory of existing homes begins to expand,” said Lisa Sturtevant, chief economist at Bright Multiple Listing Service, in a statement.

Prospective homebuyers who are looking at new construction are still finding some builders offering concessions, upgrades, or favorable financing terms, she said.
