Wealth Of Hong Kong’s 50 Richest On Forbes List Falls To $296 Billion

SINGAPORE (February 22, 2024) – The combined wealth of tycoons on the 2024 Forbes list of Hong Kong’s 50 Richest declined to US$296 billion from $324 billion last year. The complete list is available here and in the February/March issue of Forbes Asia.

Hong Kong’s economy grew an estimated 3.2% in 2023, buoyed by an uptick in tourist arrivals and consumption.

However, with a sluggish IPO market and a stagnant property sector, the post-pandemic recovery has been slower than expected. The benchmark Hang Seng index declined 28% since fortunes were last measured a year ago.

Overall, 30 list members saw their fortunes fall, including Li Ka-shing, who retained the top spot even as his net worth declined to $36.2 billion from $39 billion last year. Shares of Li’s CK Asset Holdings, which reduced prices of some residential projects to boost demand, dropped by a third from last year.

Real estate tycoon Lee Shau Kee remained at No. 2 though his net worth fell to $27 billion from $30.3 billion. Shares of Henderson Land dropped 30% in a weak market despite the better performance of its gas utility and hotel businesses. At No. 3 is Henry Cheng, whose fortune, which he shares with his family, was down nearly $7 billion to $22.1 billion, the biggest fall this year in dollar terms, amid slowing demand from the mainland.

The Lee siblings of LKK Group retained the No. 4 spot, despite their net worth slipping to $17.7 billion from $19.3 billion last year. Rounding out the top five on the list is Peter Woo of Wheelock & Co. with $13.7 billion, down from $16.9 billion previously. Source: Forbes

Indonesia inaugurates largest port for eastern region

Indonesia inaugurated the Makassar New Port with an investment of 5.4 trillion rupiah (around 345 million U.S. dollars) in South Sulawesi, the second largest port in Indonesia after Tanjung Priok in Jakarta.

“We hope that this large port in eastern Indonesia will streamline domestic logistics costs,” said Indonesian President Joko Widodo on the sidelines of the inauguration on Thursday.

In the face of fierce domestic and international competition, Widodo underlined the importance of efficiency.
Due to the absence of integration between port locations and factories and industrial zones, logistics expenses in Indonesia reached 24 percent 10 years ago.

Although it has now dropped to 14 percent, Widodo said more needs to be done to lower this percentage.

Vietnam is set to see the sharpest spike in wealth growth over the next decade as it cements its status as a global manufacturing hub, according to a report by global wealth intelligence firm New World Wealth and investment migration advisors Henley & Partners.

The Southeast Asian country is forecast to see a 125% increase in wealth over the next 10 years, Andrew Amoils, New World Wealth’s analyst, told CNBC. This would be the largest expansion in wealth of any country in terms of GDP per capita and number of millionaires, according to the firm’s analysis.

“Vietnam is an increasingly popular manufacturing base for multinational tech, automotive, electronics, clothing and textile firms,” Amoils said. India, which is set to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027, takes the second spot with an expected 110% growth in wealth, he added.

Vietnam, which is home to 19,400 millionaires and 58 centimillionaires, is perceived as a relatively safe country compared with other nations in the Asia-Pacific region, Amoils said, which provides companies an extra incentive to set up manufacturing operations in the county.

The country’s “strategic location” — sharing a land border with China and being close to major maritime trade routes — low cost of labor, as well as infrastructure supporting exports from the nation have all transformed Vietnam into a “prime destination” for international investment, McKinsey said in a report.

Vietnam’s 2023 GDP growth slowed to 5.05% compared with a 8.02% expansion in 2022 on the back of dimmer global demand and stalled public investment. Manufacturing accounts for a quarter of its GDP.

Just 10 years ago, Vietnam’s GDP per capita was around $2,190, which nearly doubled to $4,100, according to data from the World Bank.

More than 5 million visitors arrive in first seven weeks of 2024

Thailand welcomed 5,217,379 overseas visitors between January 1 and February 18, a 49% jump year on year, Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol reported on Tuesday.

She added that these visitors have generated tourism income of around 254.7 billion baht for Thai entrepreneurs.

During the first seven weeks of this year, China was the top source of foreign tourists to Thailand, with 987,941 arrivals, followed by Malaysia (641,605), Russia (347,837), South Korea (341,447), and India (258,269).

Sudawan attributed the jump to the success of the government’s visa-free policy, which has been implemented since September last year. This began with visa exemptions for visitors from China and Kazakhstan, which were followed by India and Taiwan in November.

Another contributing factor is the revocation of TM 6 certificate at the Sadao border checkpoint in Songkhla province, which has facilitated the travel of Malaysian tourists to Thailand’s southern region.

In the past week (February 12-18), foreign arrivals were recorded at 821,989, down 4.61% from the previous week or by 40,246 people, bringing the average foreign arrivals
per day to 118,856 people.

The ministry expects foreign arrivals to rise again this week (February 19-25), thanks to the permanent visa waiver deal for Thai and Chinese citizens and an increase in flights.

Thailand and China have agreed to waive visa requirements for their citizens permanently from March 1, a policy that comes into effect soon after the free visa policy expires.

The ministry has set a revenue target for 2024 of 3.5 trillion baht, 2.3 trillion baht of which is expected to come from some 40 million foreign arrivals. Domestic tourists, meanwhile, will contribute 1.2 trillion baht from around 200-220 million person trips. Source: The Nation

Stocks bask in tech mania, Nvidia boom

SYDNEY :Global stock markets are on course one Friday for a week of heady gains as AI darling Nvidia’s stunning results sparked a wave of record highs from Asia to Europe and the U.S., while the yen nursed losses
on a range of currencies.

European markets pointed to higher openings with EUROSTOXX 50 futures up 0.1 per cent and FTSE futures gaining 0.2 per cent. U.S. futures were mostly flat.
Nvidia surged 16.4 per cent overnight, adding a record $277 billion in market value.

The company’s results supercharged a global AI-led rally in technology stocks, propelling the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrials, Europe’s STOXX 600 and Japan’s Nikkei share average to record highs.

Some regional tech shares took a breather after a stellar rally this week, but MSCI Asia-Pacific ex-Japan IT index still put on 0.3 per cent to its highest level since March 2022.

South Korea’s Hynix, the world’s second-biggest memory chipmaker which counts Nvidia (NVDA.O) as a key client, jumped 2.2 per cent and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd rallied 1 per cent. The Global X Asia semiconductor ETF was up 0.9 per cent.

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan pared early gains to be up 0.2 per cent and was heading for a weekly gain of 1.3 per cent.
Chinese shares wobbled between gains and losses.

The Shanghai Composite index rose above the psychologically key 3,000-point mark before retreating to trade 0.3 per cent higher. It is up 4.6 per cent for the week and has bounced about 10 per cent from five-year lows set more than two weeks ago.

Data showed on Friday that China’s new home prices fell for the seventh month in January, leaving sentiment fragile as policymakers’ efforts to restore confidence in the debt-ridden sector struggled for traction.

Shane Oliver, chief economist at AMP, said markets in general have been resilient even as global central banks pushed back against hopes for early rate cuts.

“I think the markets are sort of coming to the view ‘well maybe we’ll get the rate cuts’. They may not be as much as we thought, and they might be later, but if the economic activity is still good then that’s not a problem.”

A Reuters poll showed that the recent rally in global stocks had a little further to go but they were divided on whether there would be a correction in the next three months.

The influential Fed Governor Christopher Waller on Thursday said policymakers should wait at least another couple of months to see if inflation was indeed heading back to target.

Rates markets continued to pare back U.S. policy easing expectations on the back of strong U.S. economic data.
Jobless claims fell, home sales rose to a five-month high although the expansion in business activity slipped a little.

The first Fed cut is now fully priced in for July, and just 80 basis points of easing is reflect in this year’s curve.

The cash Treasuries market is closed on Friday, but overnight, the 10-year Treasury yield rose to a three-month high of 4.3540 per cent.

In the foreign exchange market, the yen was little changed at 150.59 per dollar on Friday, above the 150 level seen as possibly drawing Japanese intervention to slow the currency’s decline.

However, the yen has taken a beating against a broad range of currencies as investors bet the Bank of Japan will keep monetary policy accommodative even after ending negative interest rates.

The Australian and kiwi dollars hit nine-year highs on the yen overnight and were last fetching 98.89 and 93.33 yen.

The euro hovered at 162.96 yen, nearing a 15-year high of 164.30.
Oil prices fell after climbing on supply fears as hostilities in the Red Sea showed no signs of abating. A large build in U.S. crude inventories also weighed.
